Building Permits

Permits are needed for:
  • Building any addition

  • Adding a garage
  • Enclosing a breezeway
  • Pouring a driveway/patio or sidewalk
  • Interior remodels
  • Adding an accessory structure, such as a shed or carport

  • Earthworks (any type of digging or trenching)
  • Fences
Permits are not required for window repair and siding.

These fees are determined by the amount of the project. Building fees start at $25 for the first $1,000 and each additional $1,000 will increase $2 per thousand. Example: $6,000 project will be $35 ($25 for the first 1,000, then an additional $2 per thousand for the 5,000 = $35 permit).

Demolition Permits

Permits are needed whenever a structure or accessory structure is being taken down. An additional check sheet is also enclosed to make sure all utilities are informed and removed. Trash receipts are also required to ensure that the remains of the structure was properly removed to appropriate facilities.

No fee is required but a permit is required and the Checklist for demolition.

Excavation Permits

Excavation permits are needed any time someone cuts or encumbers any sidewalk, alley, curb, gutter or any improved surface of any street or alley or makes any opening or excavation in the parking, between the right-of-way of the street and the adjacent private property line, or in any public parking lot, or to lay any pipes or wires in the City. All materials must be the same as was present before the excavation. Please read the Excavation Ordinance for complete details.

Excavation permits require no fee, but work must be completed within 14 days from the day the permit will be issued. If not completed in that time period, for each additional day, the same person, firm, or corporation will be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, will pay the sum of $150 per day that the restoration work is not completed.
